Initiation

The idea for Hungarian Metal Awards HangSúly™ came up in 2006 after seeing the Fonogram awards broadcasted on the Hungarian State Television, the so-called „Royal Television”.

In this show Hungarian record labels gave each others plastic celebrities the „awards”. Meanwhile the international rock/metal websites were just announcing the names of the winners of Danish Metal Awards at all forums, and shortly after the winners of the Finnish Metal Awards also appeared in the news.

These parallel events lead to the creation of Hungarian Metal Awards. We don’t have that many internationally recognized rock/metal bands as Denmark or Finnland, but Hungarian bands are also in need of such a positive feedback. According to our plans, each year in February we vote for the best studio albums the past year.

Purpose

Since 2006 Hungarian Metal Awards is intented to be a positive feedback to Hungarian rock/metal bands, and is also meant to get the attention of the fans of this music style, and for the wider public as well. By picking the best productions we would like to pay a tribute to the musicians, sound engineers, illustrators at the Hungarian rock/metal scene in order to further motivate them in their endeavours.

Another purpose is to strengthen the role public opinion forming of the Hungarian online rock/metal press, as the Hungarian Metal Awards is voted by the editorial staff of the active Hungarian webzines in the following categories:

  • Album of the Year
  • Debut Album of the Year
  • Best Live Band
  • Best Studio Production
  • Best Album Cover Art

In each category only Hungarian bands and their albums can be nominated (regardless of the language of their lyrics). The Best Album Cover Art awards the illustrators naturally, and Best Studio Production is given to the studio and it’s staff, that managed to produced the best sound last year.

Album of the Year:

 Thy Catafalque (2011, 2015, 2016, 2018)

Best Live Band:

 Blind Myself (2005, 2009, 2010)

Best Studio Production:

 Bakery Stúdió (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008)
 MD Stúdió (2005, 2010, 2011, 2012)

Best Album cover:

 Havancsák Gyula (2005, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015)

Nomination

All Hungarian albums released in the previous year participate in the nomination. When the time comes (each February), the editorial staff of the members of the jury send their votes for the albums and bands they consider to be the best in each category. They may vote for multiple albums and bands.

Except for Best Album Cover Art, only full length studio albums may be nominated, therefore demos, Eps, compilations, tribute, remix and live albums can’t be nominated. In the Best Live Band category bands are nominated, not albums. Whoever gets voted by more than one editorial staff shall become an official nominee. After summarising the votes, the album or band, which got the most votes, shall win the award in the given category.

Since Hungarian Metal Awards is a completely private effort, no financial support can be given to the winners. In fact, the award is a moral recognition. With every available source and effort we promote this Hungarian Metal Awards and it’s winners, so that they may get a wider recognition. This promotion is what meant to give Hungarian Metal Awards a true value.
